The Little Mermaid
Tuacahn Amphitheater • 2025
Costume Design: Robin McGee
My third season at Tuacahn I took a crafts artisan position and jumped in the week before tech rehearsal for The Little Mermaid. I arrived and quickly had to assemble and cover the starfish design featured to the left. I also was able to create a historically inspired ruff for the royal seahorse. Although repetitive, creating a ruff is a really satisfying project.
Process
While the whirlwind production time left me without process photos, this starfish had many steps to completion. First the foam segments shaped like v’s had to be glued together using all purpose cement. Once dry they needed to be covered in both the tie-dye spandex, and the ruffled sequined knit material. To do this we used spray adhesive and multiple hands to get the tie-dye material on without sticking anywhere too quickly. Once all the fabric was on the front and back of the starfish needed to be stitched together using an industrial walking foot machine. I had the pleasure of working with someone who had experience building sporting game mascots, and she taught me how to get such tall foam into the machine by using an awl. Then for the finishing I hand stitched the edging trim all the way around the legs.
