I find great satisfaction in turning the weird and wonderful ideas of my designers into wearable parts of an actor’s costume. From foam patterning and fabrication techniques to digital CAD fluency and using smart cutting machines and laser cutters, I create multimedia works of art that are durable enough to withstand a five-month run outside in the desert.
Frozen at the Arvada Center was one of the most collaborative and fulfilling projects I have worked on. As Draper, I built over 8 full looks for Anna and Elsa, and worked with costume crafts and the designer to create unique and elaborate decals to embellish our builds.
For this production of The Wizard of Oz I created a wire whisk-collar. We wanted the collar to be strong and unable to be bent out of shape, which led me to use underwires from bras to create a consistent curve, that was sturdy yet flexible.
The second patterning project for this season was to create marshmallow peeps. The costume crafts shop asked for a pattern they could cut out of header foam to achieve the shape of a marshmallow peep.
Often, brides will have a vision for their gowns that cannot be found off the rack. So when my bride approached me with a gown she loved, and explained that it was missing the silver detailing she really wanted, we started looking at options.
As one of the Drapers for Hunchback of Notre Dame, I was assigned Esmeralda’s first look, and her festival dancer look.
For one half of my culminating project I wanted to explore further techniques in puppetry fabrication while also creating 1/2 scale 18th century costumes for these characters.
Based off the text Tartuffe by Moliere I designed the characters Madame Pernelle and Orgon as marionette puppets.
In this introductory Millinery course, I created two completely handcrafted hats.
